The first NYC LGBT Pride Rally occurred 1 month after the Stonewall Riots in June 1969, with 500 people gathering for a “Gay Power” demonstration in Washington Square Park.
This NYC Event was followed by a candlelight vigil in Sheridan Square. Today the Pride Week Rally is held at the East River Bandshell. The entire Rally will be ASL interpreted for individuals who are deaf/hard-of-hearing.
Another huge part of Pride Week is PrideFest, New York’s annual LGBT street fair that brings together local residents and families, community leaders, and area business owners for an exciting New York Event celebrating gay pride. PrideFest attracts thousands of out-of-state New York Visitors and volunteers, and 2013 marks PrideFest’s 20th year!
Annually, PrideFest continues to combine vendors, entertainers, and community activities for a day of fun celebration of LGBT Pride in the name of equality. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary.
